PostSubject: Teenagers’ Internet Socializing Not a Bad Thing   Thu Nov 20, 2008 6:31 pm

By TAMAR LEWIN
Published: November 19, 2008

Good news for worried parents: All those hours their teenagers spend socializing on the Internet
are not a bad thing, according to a new study by the MacArthur Foundation.

“It may look as though kids are wasting a lot of time hanging out with new media,
whether it’s on MySpace or sending instant messages,” said Mizuko Ito,
lead researcher on the study, “Living and Learning With New Media.”
“But their participation is giving them the technological skills and literacy
they need to succeed in the contemporary world.

They’re learning how to get along with others,
how to manage a public identity, how to create a home page.”

If you took the internet away these kids today would be lost.

I grew up hanging out down at the drive in or out at the lake with no internet (or cell phones for that matter) and if I had it to do all over again I'd do it the same way I did back then.

same here. we even had very little tv. at that it was black and white, poor reception and we could only watch when our parents turned it on. we were always outside doing something. I rarely remember being bored. Even on sundays when a lot of my friends were in church all day there were always things I could do to keep busy.

I lived where about a million and a half acres of national forest was just over the back fence and I had a horse.

Me bored ? No way. Even though we lived way out in the sticks with no other kids living close by.

there were a lot of kids in our area. pretty big age spread too. but often people spearated into groups or clicks and these changed a lot. but it wasn't the number of people that made the activities. it was our individual attitudes. we wanted to be out and about. you would never think of just hanging out in the house. on rainy days you still wanted to get out. we were surrounded by a lot of woods. at least enough woods that, as kids, we never got beyond them. lakes, streams, swamps, old abandon barns and houses. we were always fishing, building forts, climbing trees, playing sports or war or man from uncle or something. there were also little neighborhoods, 10 -15 houses, scattered around. every once in a while we would take a road trip on our bicycles and hang out with kids from them. we ate breakfast and we were out. back for lunch and out, then back for dinner.

I can't even imagine how much different things would have been, if we had had cellphones, when I was a kid. It would have been dangerous.

I watched "Digital Nation" on PBS last night...it was interesting, all about the pors & cons
of our digital frontier .... researchers are trying to forecast the effect being so integrated online
is having on our physiology and what will happen in the future

One part of the show discussed what is going on in Korea, where they have determined t
hey have a serious problem with their youth being so addicted, especially to online gaming

here's the link to the documentary and the "Netiquette" song they are now programming into
their young schoolchildren to teach them to be "Internet Guardian Angels" ...it's cute !!

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/digitalnation/learning/schools/netiquette.html?play

LYRICS:

While chatting, first greet happily
Use polite words in a cordial way
During the game always be open, honest and do the right thing
Be careful on the keyboard
I know who did it (be careful) I know
I am the internet guardian angel
I will be the first to protect
I want to be the first to protect
Though faces are unknown, it’s a warm neighborhood
Precious Internet friend
Precious Internet friend (friend!)
Netiquette!

there was another part of that documentary, Digital Nation, it was about
Boot Camp Rehab for teens addicted to gaming

the kids looked so miserable...like they were at a Diet Camp and no one would feed them

they acted like they were dying a slow painful death and perhaps contemplating
just ending it all right there & now

My parents used to "punish" me by sticking me in a room with only a *shudder* BOOK to keep me company. That was how I got to know William Saroyan and Ray Bradbury...
